Giuseppe Penone at Versailles

Giuseppe Penone (b. 1947) is an Italian artist and a member of the Arte Povera movement.  His work is concerned with creating contact between people and nature.  The exhibition of his work in the grounds of the chateau of Versailles finished last month and I managed to get along on the very last day.

Giuseppe Penone Spazio di Luce2“Spazio di Luce”, 2012.  Penone covered a tree in wax before casting it in bronze. Behind is “Tra Scorza e Scorza” (Between bark and bark).

The “Anatomie” series.  These carrera marble statues show veins or roots picked out in the stone.  I think Penone followed the natural veining in the marble.

Practical Information

The Chateau of Versailles can be reached on the RER E from central Paris.  The station is Versailles Rive-Gauche-Chateau de Versailles and then there is a 5 minute walk to the chateau (come out of the station, turn left then right).  Entry to the gardens is free on days when the fountains are not working.  Everything is closed on Mondays.
